Sun Tzu Strategies and its underlying principles

The Art of War has not gained great popularity for any reason. All strategies from Sun Tzu described in use today. Also, until you closely follow all his instructions, you'll be victorious in every battle. The older the book's content may be vague for some, but if you read carefully to be able to understand and apply all the essential strategies Sun Tzu.

The main one described in depth the art of war is the ability to collect yourBattles. This strategy for victory is essential. As Sun Tzu says: "Who, if he can fight and win is if he does not know." It 'easy to understand the message - if you win when the enemy is weak to the attack.

At this point, one could say that it is difficult to understand the situation of the enemy. For this reason, a next-Sun Tzu Strategies is the essence of knowledge. Until about your opponent, you can prepare for battleand to win it.

Another point is the strategy, not the thing that will win you win. This is essential. To your destination, without really here to achieve something of value.

In the book there are strategies to use deception to win a battle - "Be extremely subtle, to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of silence." There are methods that are quite specific and can be used in different situations described. TheThe speed and training, in which advances for victory is essential.

The strategies include Sun Tzu, the tactics of leadership. In his book, the author stresses the example set by leaders and their responsibility to their men.

One who chooses to read this story presumably is interested in the subject matter. It is, indeed, a compelling story of a young woman who wanted to fly since riding a in barnstormer's plane as a teenager. Bartering and bargaining her way through flight lessons, she parlayed her love of flight into a job as head of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots of WWII. Along the way, Ms. Love managed to have a happy and fulfilling domestic life as well.
Ms. Rickman wrote the story based on hours of interviews and intensive document research. She did a great job of making factual/historical a good entertaining read. I laughed out loud at more than a few passages and felt a range of emotions as I read of the trials, thrills and perils of flying in the forties. Included are many nice photos showing the fashion of the day. "Ladies" wore dresses, silk stockings, and heels to pilot those airplanes. Imagine working the pedals and controls dressed like that. Sarah Rickman transports us in space and time with her vivid descriptions of open cockpits, near misses, and battles with the "boys' club" mentality. I recommend this book.

Paris, Moi and The Gang: A Memoir... of Sorts for $15.28

Cheap Paris, Moi and The Gang: A Memoir... of Sorts Discount Review Shop

Paris, Moi and the Gang is part faux memoir, part travel guide, and part romance novel and is absolutely entertaining. Frances Gendlin is a veteran travel author; she writes with a friendly, conversational style that will quickly have you feeling like you and she are old friends.

The story is told from protagonist Frances' point-of-view as she researches and writes her latest Paris guide. Paris, Moi and the Gang follows an eclectic group of friends affectionately known as the Gang. This group of American Expatriates truly cares about and supports each other through the successes and failures of daily life in "the city of light." The gang's number grows and shrinks as members travel abroad or return from stints in the US. There's Caroline, the historian, who is researching the history of famous Americans who lived in Paris for her own book; and Sandra, the divorced pianist, and a connoisseur of everything Parisienne from the shopping to the men. Men are not left out of this club and we meet the recent widower, wine aficionado and master of high finance, Richard. Paul and Klaus are the self-professed Oldest Queens in Paris. "The boys" have an endearing uncles-niece type relationship with Frances and are never far when needed for advice on men, failed relationships, and the best spots to lunch. The chain-smoking Alice and her husband, the crusty Findlay, who have called Paris home for over 60 years, round out the circle.

Life in Paris appears simple enough; write a little, greet friends with a warm kiss, sit down for great food, wine and conversation at a wonderful locale. However, as Frances often remarks, "everything in Paris is an event." Gendlin shows how seemingly simple tasks like sorting out a cell phone glitch or having new house keys cut become a prolonged adventure sure to test even the most reserved temper, as customer service is non-existent. This is where the guide portion of the book shines as Gendlin gives helpful hints for dealing with cashiers, repairmen, and shop owners in procedures differing from that in the States. Throughout the book are sidebars containing a wealth of useful hints, history, and advice. From the best cheese, bread, and wine, to a unique recipe for scrambled eggs with truffles, to a full restaurant guide and a helpful look at accents.

Frances has an appreciation for living in Paris and a romance, so to speak, with the city, not that she doesn't see her fair share of attention from men. She picks her male "projects" and then goes with the flow as events unfold as they may, much like she does everyday.

From this book, I take away a belief that visiting Paris for a few weeks of vacation is like taking a single sip of a fine wine; you get a nice taste but not the full experience. Whether Paris, Moi and the Gang is fiction or memoir, it is an exceptional book with characters and scenery so well written and described that you are captivated from the first chapter and your interest is held until the final pages. Anyone contemplating a move to life in Paris must read this book. Think of it as a test-drive! This book is easy to enjoy; if you add it to your summer reading list, it won't disappoint.

Highly Recommend by William Potter for Reader's Choice Book Reviews

If you are looking for a well organized overview of TW's life and career, look somewhere else. For someone truly interested in Tennessee Williams, I would suggest first reading a biography of him, and if you are still interested, read this to find out what made this man tick, what made this man get out of bed each day and write, and what a (....) guy he was. This is a nitty-gritty, confessional look inward at the personal aspects and thoughts of the life of a very talented writer.
I am sure what shocked his public when it was published in 1975 was his frank description of his love life and sexual affairs. For Ernest Hemingway it was okay to describe his love life because he was straight, but for a gay man it was (and still largely is) expected to be kept discreetly sub-rosa. But Tennessee was not ashamed of his nature and not ashamed of his life and in that way this memoir (and his life itself) is an act of cultural defiance. It pours out in a fairly disjointed stream of recollections. To be honest, it reads like a rough-draft that needs a lot of editing and filling in. But all-in-all, the inherent drama, passion and thirst for life itself jump out of the page and carry one through to the end and you can't help but be touched by his humanity and his passion and his drive to express himself through his art.

That's Not All Folks! Mel Blanc - Book Review

In That's Not All Folks! learn to know the face and the person behind Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and hundreds of other items Looney Tunes - Mel Blanc.

Mel Blanc (1908-1989) was a comic genius, really hard work to ensure that even a Hollywood career with his amazing talent. This biography is his story about who and what inspires its many voices, in addition to the steep stairs to climb to fulfill her dreams. I do, that sounds like the matrix of allStars and their bio data, but given the time, this story is really inspiring.

Two major components make That's Not All Folks extremely helpful. They are: 1) The picture book and 2) Mel Blanc story of the foundation of his career. Mel Blanc is so charismatic and happy in all the photos, which tells me that he loved life and loved his work. I am positive experience after reading his biography, he would be my favorite if I had one of the comediansby the time he was at his best. Career-wise, Mel Blanc did not get to break a simple Hollywood. He died of starvation, have worked hard and just tried and tried to settle pending.

I found much of the book a bit 'boring, mainly because of the excessive name-dropping (Which Have have been his way of paying tribute to Those people) and details on some plots minute cartoon.

Overall, I feel more healthy reading That's Not All Folks really hope and morePeople will be able to read these titles out of print!

A Life Less Ordinary: A Memoir for $0.25

Cheap A Life Less Ordinary: A Memoir Discount Review Shop

I read this book in basically one sitting. It was a page-turner, in that I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. "End" is a funny word for the ending because the author Baby Halder is still so young with a long life ahead of her. This is a phenomenal book, not just because it tells Baby's story, but because it tells a story that millions of women around the world share. And we need to hear this story. And what makes it more phenomenal is that the author was able to break free from abuse and poverty to write an internationally published book and share her story of a life less ordinary.

I spent much of the book wondering how I could've dealt with the loss of my mother or the tolerated murder of my sister or the unimagineable thought of my 12 year old daughter getting married and having children, or if I would've had the courage to get on a train with my children and nothing more to try to find a better life.

An issue with the writing in this book is that the author frequently switches from 1st to 3rd person, but I looked at it like less of a grammatical error and more of the author speaking in 3rd person when the topic was very painful. I really highly recomend this book.

Don't Wake Me at Doyles: A Memoir for $2.98

Cheap Don't Wake Me at Doyles: A Memoir Discount Review Shop

I do not usually write public reviews but the Boston lady's entry entitled 'Dribble' [sic] has needled me. It cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged: it gives a terribly misleading account of Maura Murphy's remarkable memoir, 'Don't Wake Me at Doyles'. Mrs Murphy speaks with honesty and courage about a life undermined by extreme poverty and hardship, both in Ireland in the 40s and 50s and in England in the 60s. Her story is unique for its fearlessness, frankness and humour. She is speaking out for a generation of women silenced for so long by the might of the Catholic Church, incarcerated by patriarchy and oppressed by poverty. She is brave enough to acknowledge that her religion forbade birth control which resulted in nine much-loved children. The author comments on her state of perennial pregnancy in terms of the Church and her faith but she does not say she regrets giving birth to them. On the contrary it is clear the family's love and loyalty is what binds them through their difficult times. Mrs Murphy did not visit the priest for medical advice! This is a preposterous misreading of her words. Mrs Murphy's dilemma over her life-saving hysterectomy was one of ethics and religous faith, not of medicine. Mrs Murphy is clearly a proud Irish woman, a serious Catholic (why else would she have sought a priest's blessing?) and, quite obviously, a proud wife and mother. Her amazing wit and humour underpins the narrative and these are just some of the reasons for cherishing 'Don't Wake Me at Doyles'. This book is unique and awe-inspiring. Open your minds and hearts and buy this book. It is an education!

Behind The Veil (International, Political, & Economic History) for $20.00

Cheap Behind The Veil (International, Political, & Economic History) Discount Review Shop

"The chief symbol of my private and political dilemma was the veil, or chador. Resisting urgings and threats to cover myself in public during that chaotic epoch of 1979-80 grew out of a resolve to maintain my personal identity," writes Dr. Debra Johanyak in the introduction to a thrilling memoir of her experiences in Iran, particularly during those 444 days when the world waited to learn of the fate of the American embassy hostages.

In 1974 at a Midwestern University, Debra, a single-mother and the Assistant International Student Advisor, meets Nas, an Iranian student. After a whirlwind campus courtship, Nas proposes to Debra and presents her an unusually romantic gift. Debra is swept away and says, "Yes." She confides that her family were "not shocked" at her betrothal, for mixed marriages were not uncommon. A generation earlier her Baptist mother had married her father of Russian Orthodox background. From scrutiny of the little things that Nas does, such as his devotion to and legal adoption of Debra's son, it is clear that he truly loves her and marries her not just for the green-card. While the INS makes certain that it isn't a marriage-of-convenience, there is no doubt that Debra would not have agreed, if she had any doubts of Nas's affection.

Opportunities in Iran beckon and, in 1977, Debra and Nas along with their two little boys move to Shiraz. Debra is thrilled to be there, and her first impression on arrival is to marvel at the "bluest sky I had ever seen - and the warmest sun." She is received with open arms by Nas's family and there is nary a harsh word from them to her. Although, within the year, Debra returns to the States, following an emergency surgery, Nas pursues her there and brings her back to Shiraz. However, in 1979 Iran is much changed following the departure of the Shah and the return of Ayatollah Khomeini. Although, there is political unrest in the capital, Tehran, Nas and Debra feel they are safe in the out of the way city, Shiraz. Nevertheless, time would prove them to be wrong.

Debra resumes her English teaching position at the university and also enrols in graduate studies. While life at home continues normally - they have a flat of their own - it is at the university and in the streets that Debra faces the most harassments. Having a naturally dark complexion, likely inherited from her grandfather's intersecting Native American bloodline, she could have passed for a Persian, yet it was her attire that mostly drew attention to her.

Following the demonstrations and protests in Tehran, demanding the return of the Shah from the US, the turmoil spreads towards Shiraz. It was not long after the militant's takeover of the embassy, in November 1979, that Debra feels the first inkling of the chaos. One evening three young women follow her from the bus stop and shout at her to go home and put on a chador. The other shocking occurrence is when she reads on an orchard wall, written in blood-red letters a threatening assertion: "Women who don't wear veils are whores. Men who don't make them are pigs." Other incidences of verbal and physical harassment follow - one even of a sexual nature that she escapes miraculously due to the timely appearance of Nas.

Life could not have been the same for Debra after these occurrences. Her Iranian family remain dispassionate and even the strong-headed Nas, on her question, whether or not to wear a veil, replies, "I don't know." She is even escorted to a church - at a secretive location. However, there are some hints for her to conform, at least in public, such as her sister-in-law taking her to a tailor under the pretence of, "You need new clothes for the university." For Christmas a family friend goes to great lengths to bring her a pine tree. But most of all she is thrilled to receive a present of a chiffon fabric `lovely printed chador'. While Debra puts it away in a bottom drawer, it comes in handy one day.

While Debra succumbs to at least wearing a beret, she steadfastly refuses to wear the chador. It would seem she wishes to live in an in-between world that of the country club crowd and the Islamic fundamentalists. Her reasons being: " ... I had studied Islam in college, and Pari and I often discussed our divergent beliefs. I also had seen the militant side of Islam in the embassy takeover, and in Zahra's adopted identity. But I felt it was not right for me. I believed in Christianity, though I was not sure what to do about it, especially in an Islamic country. I began thinking more about my spiritual state. How ironic that my soul should awaken in an Islamic culture!" In the end Debra believes that she made the right decision.

The book is very well written, as Dr. Johanyak is not only a highly educated person, but also teaches, among other subjects, Creative Writing - and it shows in the book's structure, plot, characterization, dialogue, and narrative. Aficionados of history will truly enjoy this book, for it has much historic details told in the appealing usual `trappings' of page turning intrigue and chapter ending hooks. While this memoir is somewhat different than Ms. Mahmoody's, "Not Without My Daughter," it is thrilling just the same. There are many anecdotal descriptions of life in Iran, the culture, customs, and the cuisine, not only in the cities but also in the rural areas were Debra and Nas often visit. In typical espionage-novel style there are heart-beating incidences, such as the time when one night returning from the village their car is stopped at a roadblock, but they manage to get away without the discovery of Nas's loaded revolver! There are many humorous moments as well, for instance when one night the huge rodents residing in between and gnawing the walls of their house, decide to: ... if Carter wasn't ready to act, the rats were. That night they made their move... writes Debra.

The one revelation that I personally found most intriguing was when Debra relates a comment made by one of her Shiraz University professors: Some of us worried the situation would turn worse, while others thought the prisoners would be released in the near future. "Wait until Ronald Reagan gets elected," one of the male professors said. "The hostages will be released like that!" He snapped his fingers for emphasis. I found it interesting that people in that far off university were attuned to US politics.

Although, the recent Jan 20th anniversary date of the release of the hostages seemed to have passed by quietly (except for an article in our Canadian national newspaper), it was likely remembered by many. Dr. Debra Johanyak's book is an important contribution towards understanding the East-West relationships and the turmoil that is still engulfing the Middle East. The memoir's basic message, in Debra's words, emerges as: "While mutual distrust continues over oil supplies and nuclear capabilities, it is time to put hostilities aside and begin building a new relationship based on mutual respect."

Reviewed by, Waheed Rabbani, a historical fiction writer living in Ontario Canada. His The Azadi Trilogy Book I: Doctor Margaret's Sea Chest was published in Dec 2008 and is available on all Amazon and other bookstores.

Turkey diet containing amino acid L-tryptophan, which induces drowsiness. L-tryptophan produces vitamin B, niacin, or in the body. Tryptophan is divided into serotonin and melatonin broken. These are chemical messengers that cause the serenity and induce sleep. WhenL-tryptophan on an empty stomach is taken without amino acids or proteins, it makes you feel tired and sleepy.

The Agitator's Daughter: A Memoir of Four Generations of One Extraordinary African-American Family for $0.01

Cheap The Agitator's Daughter: A Memoir of Four Generations of One Extraordinary African-American Family Discount Review Shop

Full disclosure: I was a former student of author Sherryl Cashin (former being the key word here--there's no incentive for me to provide anything but a truthful review). In the classroom we could pick up on her dedication to providing high quality instruction and issues of equality. Even these traits offered little clue of the illustrious family line described in her new book, The Agitator's Daughter. The book takes a honest and emotionally open look into the accomplishments, motivations, and struggles of an African-American family that has been politically prominent for several generations. The Agitator's Daughter will likely cause all who read it to reflect on their own "inheritance." While I am not smart enough to identify genius, Cashin make masterful connections between her lineage and the progress of both African-American rights and relationships between individuals of various socioeconomic backgrounds generally.

Let's face it--many people will receive nary a nickel of financial inheritance from their parents. In this memoir Cashin reflects on the priceless gifts children and adults receive from their parents, loved ones or if that term doesn't apply, relatives. This legacy includes an abundance of knowledge about their family's past and the strength and will to persevere despite obstacles placed in their path, no matter what their background may be. These are invaluable lessons that echo throughout life. Cashin shows how this legacy makes it possible for individuals to instill within themselves self reliance, work ethic, and the need to help others and/or engage in formalized service activities, whether overtly or covertly.

Cashin reveals her feelings towards her inheritance in a very candid manner by telling her intriguing family story. The family history lovingly passed to her from her father served as a motivating factor for writing this family memoir. Cashin notes that "[a] confident man tends to talk about himself, and Daddy is more confident than most." She greatly benefited from her father's talkativeness and passes the knowledge given to her by her father on through her memoir. The memoir also synthesizes information from archives research, family documents, and an ancestry website.

Cashin first traces her family line through five generations. She begins with the biracial union of an Irish slaveowner and "mulatto" slave. The author's great-grandfather Herschel Cashin was one of the couple's seven children. He eventually became one of Alabama's first Black lawyers and a proponent of political rights for African-Americans. Herschel Cashin played a substantial role in Reconstruction gains for African-American progress and equality. He used the law and legislation to obtain voting rights for Blacks, and worked with other trailblazers such as Booker T. Washington, one instance in the book showing that "a disempowered people will always have disagreements about how to proceed."

As another book reviewer stated, to whom much is given, much is required. Some individuals who have much and recognize the truth in this statement reach out to loved ones, close friends, and individuals in their immediate community to contribute. The agitator in the memoir , "Daddy" to Cashin and "John Logan" to readers, felt compelled to reach out to disadvantaged individuals generally and advocate for equal rights. John Logan was a dentist by trade.

John Logan corralled and collaborated with multiracial groups of individuals of varying socioeconomic means to work towards their common goal of equal rights for all. He became a full-fledged activist after completing his graduate studies and traveling to Europe. In Europe, John Logan's "historical consciousness deepened with the humanitarian treatment he received." John Logan was motivated by his grandfather Herschel Cashin's civil rights work and empathy for individuals of lesser means. The agitator sacrificed greatly in battling racial inequality. John Logan's work and the work of other pioneers paved the way for an African-American (now President Elect who also helped others and now has the opportunity to effect change on a massive scale)and a woman to head the U.S. presidential ticket.

Cashin explores the depths to which the agitator would go in following in his great-grandfather's footsteps and how her family was affected with anecdotes and ample research. It takes an agitator to address the status quo. John Logan overcame barriers based on race through strategic action. The agitator was a wealthy man who poured his heart and fortune into his political causes and friendships. He experienced devastating results that significantly affected Cashin's entire immediate family. His monetary generosity particularly impacted the family.

Cashin also offers little nuggets of knowledge relied on by African-Americans during less racially harmonious times. Cashin includes the experiences of others growing up in a time where the nation struggled with inequality and her experiences growing up as a "first" and "only." These experiences made it possible for children today of all stripes to grow up in welcoming environments and attend schools without encountering bigotry where teachers encouraged all students.

This memoir is perfect for individuals or groups that want a book that tells an engaging personal family story where themes affecting all of our lives such as history, politics, race relations, internal struggle, socioeconomic class are linked to introspection and progress. Cashin forthrightly discusses her journey in wrestling with her legacy. The Agitator's Daughter provides invaluable insight and serves as inspiration to others to discover and grow their own "inheritance."
