Cheeni Rao's memoir In Hanuman's Hands describes the terrible period in his life when, during his college years, all his earlier insecurities coalesced into a drug fueled journey that dictated the rest of his life. It's title derives from the words his mother said to him after his family could no longer help him, consigning him to the `bringer of cures', the Hindu Monkey God Hanuman.

What follows is a discourse between Cheeni and Hanuman, who came to him in the depths of his addictions and formed the foundation of what he would believe in to try to leave his addictions behind him.

The book follows Rao's path through his short and destructive college life, his time on the streets and his time in rehab trying to put his life back together. Much more than just a memoir, it is a also a powerful discussion on how we use `myths' of our disparate histories to inform our lives.

In spare, deeply emotional language Rao conjures a seamless flow from past to present, from myth to reality, combining all into an absorbing read that I didn't want to end. That the Hindu mythology forms the foundation on which Rao builds his story, enough clear renderings of the stories are included to allow most readers to understand their link to Rao's experiences. Admittedly, it is easier for a Hindu to identify with that aspect of the book, but in no was does Rao alienate his non-Hindu reader. In Hanuman's Hands is a great read.

Einstein - His Life and Universe

Walter Isaacson has done an excellent job writing this inspirational and illuminating biography of Albert Einstein. The book is meticulously researched and purchased, but written in a fun and enjoyable which makes it very fun to read.

I was very happy with the way in which the relevant concepts, theories, principles, ideas and experiments are presented and explained in the book (for example, were the equivalence principle of relativity of simultaneity, the Michelson-Morley experiment satisfiedNewtonian concepts of absolute space and time, etc.) and the amount of space that other physicists whose work has had an impact and influence on their work of Einstein (for example, has been given, Planck, Bohr, Lorentz, Minkowski, etc.) .

The importance of independent thought and imagination and courage, the conventional wisdom when Necessary, was presented with many great examples in the book (eg Newtonian concepts of space and time) to give up. Einstein was even greater geniuswhat he thought to be. The ability of these experiments had a brilliant thought, and many see the far-reaching effects on the physical reality really amazing.

To my delight, the book is also full of great stories to illustrate Einstein's sense of humor. My favorite story was that he described his reaction to women after the Patriots had admitted the refusal of a visa petition to the United States had. His allusion to the geese that saved Rome, when I gave uplaugh.

This book is worth the time. To be read if you're interested in the history of physics.

Hearts of Stone is a call for peace and an invitation for the love of those who listen

Too often, Americans are so politically correct, demanding and uptight than lose great truths, especially in the spiritual world. The average PC-Americans, I think, about as cool as the speak of the Christian God or faith that this arena escapes all their communication.

These thoughts came to mind when I pushed it open and read a magazine called Hearts of Stone by Kate fascinating. The author uses only his last name, probably becauseafraid, attacked, ridiculed or belittled, because the courage to admit that God really speaks to her, and she listens.

Hearts of Stone is a magazine for the event, as Kate began to speak of God through dreams and, like most of these dreams into reality in a few weeks. Have prophetic dreams, enough to scare most politically correct muppets are crazy. I really do not understand why people are coming so fast to court on this issuebecause the prophetic dreams were very important, Joseph and Jacob, and pharaohs. These dreams were pharaohs so important that the interpreter of dreams full-time was at his side to explain the meaning and significance of dreams he had earlier in the night.

In the heart of stone Kate explained that their job was simply to share dreams with the public at-large, and stresses that it does not change their job or intention to someone or someone to convince them to change their view. She's a Dreamerand not a prophet, an evangelist.

Although their dreams, and the number that was true fascinating, and I was fascinated by Kate himself. He now works as a civilian in Iraq, first as an electrician and now as a project estimator. Previously, he worked for almost 20 years in the field of robotics for the Ford Motor Company. This single mother of three is also an engineer approved. So you see, is not the image of a "religious nut" who fools you into thinking God is speaking to her.Kate seems to me a brilliant, intelligent conversation, multi-talented young mother, the God who elects and is smart enough to listen and observe.

The title of the book is not only a heart of stone cold heart of stone of humanity, but they are heart-shaped stone to the Tigers. Book Review - Joe Biden - promises to keep

This 2007 book published by Random House in 2007, is not only a personal biography, but also a chronicle of political events during Joe Biden is a senator for life before he became vice-president of the United States.

Joe Biden was a strong Irish Catholic family where he was born very important family. He also formed ties with colleagues and mentors who influenced him throughout his life.

However, Mr Biden faced much tragedy. His first wife and infant daughter wereKilled in a road accident on the road to buy a Christmas tree. His two sons, who were also in the car at the time, were seriously injured in hospital. That left him as a single parent who was a career change when he had just been elected to the U.S. Senate. The funeral took him to the conclusion that he should give up the position with his children, but fortunately, friends and family encouraged him to be sworn in as senator.

I liked this book, especially when it comes to personal aspects that describe howJoe Biden in a difficult situation, always with the support of his faith, family and friends. His honesty is admirable. I wish the style was simple and clear in this part of the book through other parties, which have been blurred by unknown geographic locations, has led the complexity of legislation and political struggles that may not be familiar to the reader.

Chilling thriller author Jonathan Kellerman - Author Biographies

Jonathan Kellerman Seth was in New York City, New York, born on August 9.1949, but grew up primarily in Los Angeles, California. His parents were David and Sylvia Kellerman.

Jonathan holds a BA in psychology from UCLA. He received his doctorate in child psychology from the University of Southern California when he was only 24 years. I am a retired naval officer who served in destroyers and carriers throughout my career, during which I was under direct fire in three wars. My ship was shot up by the Japanese, my plane shot down by the Chinese and my flagship shot at by the North Vietnamese. I have a lot of vivid memories from those days of waiting and warring. I also like good war stories and I have read a lot of them. I have enjoyed only a limited few because most are usually pretty unrealistic. Those readers who have under fire in combat can usually tell whether an author has ever been in a firefight. Ken Ruiz has not only been under fire, he has generally been where the action is.
Ensign Ken Ruiz had graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1942. After two weeks of leave, he reported to his first duty station, the USS Vincennes. This was a modern, well maintained, 8 inch gunned heavy cruiser with an experienced crew. In the summer of 1942 the Americans and their allies were losing the war everywhere. In the opening pages of Luck of the Draw, Ruiz describes the battle of Savo Island and the shocking defeat of the U.S. Navy's cruiser and destroyer task force protecting the amphibious landings on Guadalcanal. In this night action, a Japanese force of cruisers and destroyers sank four of our cruisers without a loss of any of their own. Ruiz recounts in the most graphic detail the total destruction of the Vincennes. His account is the best of the many I have read of that battle. The description of the methodical and agonizing dismembering of the Vincennes' at the hands of the Japanese, is a classic.
Rescued from the treacherous waters of "Iron Bottom Bay" after his ship went down, Ruiz was sent immediately to augment the crew of a diesel submarine without the normal procedure of survivor's leave and the prescribed six months of training in the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. He had volunteered to go directly to a deploying fleet submarine in response to an emotional personal appeal by Admiral Nimitz: "We need officers like you in our submarine fleet and we need them now. Our submarines are desperately short handed". Ruiz stayed in subs for the rest of the war, and The Luck of the Draw tells his story.

Ruiz has the ability to write in a way that makes you feel that you are there. I have never served in submarines in combat but I have many contemporaries who did, and several of my friends have written books about their wartime submarine experience. They cannot match Ruiz in the reality of the accounts of his submarine war patrols in Luck of the Draw. He makes them come alive. I could swear I smelled the diesel oil and felt the damp heat of the engine room. There are no cardboard heroes such as we encounter in so many war stories. Ruiz' people are normal and alive, just as prone to error as they are capable of a satisfactory job. They are like the people you and I know.

From Ruiz we learn a lot about submarines - including their vulnerability to age, wear and the shock of battle. He shows us the same effects on his shipmates, reacting under the unrelenting tension of the silent service. This is a wonderful book. I read it through the first time without stopping. Now I keep a copy on my bedside table to pick up and read a chapter at random whenever I need that boost to my morale and the vicarious satisfaction that comes with refreshing my admiration of the courage and sacrifice of those otherwise average guys in dirty dungarees and un-pressed khakis mottled with the dark stains of their sweat, who fight this country's wars at sea.

As I specialize in reviewing POD published book, I regularly receive memoirs-twenty-five in the past four months, to be exact. In addition, I have reviewed novels based on the true-life experiences of the authors: Clouds Are Always White on Top by Nolan Lewis, Battle Downunder by Charles Rush and Fears Flutterby by Rose Lamatt, to name a few. Memoirs are written for many different reasons: to share a problem, loss and insight with others; to help work through the loss of a loved one; to share travel adventures and aspects of different cultures; to purge one's soul-confess our human foibles; and, in the end, to remember and immortalize one's own life.

Hooked on Horn is indeed a memoir, but in many ways, so much more! It's a sea adventure, a musical adventure, a small insight into our greatest jazz musicians in eras past, a family adventure, a mother's pride for her son's success. It is the story of a young man's dream, begun at age 10, and his disciplined `alpha' efforts to make that dream come true.

The parts of Gene Hull's life that he has chosen to share about his professional musical journey are entertaining, educational, humorous, musically enlightening, heart wrenching, poignantly inspirational and presented with a creative flair. Gene has been in the music/entertainment field just about all his life. He has put together a number of bands, been on the road with big-name bands, conducted bands and produced shows. Prior to retiring, he produced award-winning productions and ice shows for Royal Caribbean International.

Several stories conjured up a tear or two. The first is about the 1962 Newport Jazz Festival. Gene's group, the Jazz Giants-a band of ex-professional musicians who wanted to play interesting big band arrangements, was selected to be the guest opening band. This was their big opportunity! Allow me to quote several passages:

"Months zoomed by with extra rehearsals, arrangements being polished, new ones written, PR mailings to hundreds of jazz fans, stories and interviews in local papers, even radio interviews. Interest in us steamrolled. We were becoming a household name in Connecticut. . . .

"We kicked off our program at 8:00 PM. I don't remember a note we played; it went so fast. But I do remember the brass section screaming out into the night with colossal fire. The saxes steamed together like bonded brothers and took their ensemble sound to another level. From our first note, the energy and drive poured over me, almost putting me in a trance. The band was like a locomotive. Get out of the way everybody. Here we come.

"The applause was generous from the sell-out crowd who had come expecting to see the famous. . . . In reality most every player had managed to play close to his best at the same time. A rare moment for us. I was proud to stand up there in front of this real band of brothers, who had laid it out for all to hear. This is who we are, world."

They were expecting the album from the 1962 Newport Jazz Festival to be their "big break." But, as fate would have it, all the tapes were spoiled by an electronic quirk. There would be no album, and ultimately, the Jazz Giants's sound was lost with no `recorded' history. If Gene was 12 in 1941 when he received his first saxophone, he would have been 33 in 1962.

The second story took place over forty years after that Newport Festival. Peter, one of Gene's eight children, tracked down the live recording of the 1962 Festival and contacted the Library of Congress.

"The Gene Hull Orchestra, The Jazz Giants," had been recorded at Newport '62. A single CD could be assembled from the tape and made available with permission of the producer and for non-commercial purposes only."

Peter chose a family reunion in 2003 to present Gene with the CD of the live recording.

""Just looking at the packaged CD placed before me gave me a jolt like a sudden electric current. Shivers came right from the stomach. Then I completely lost it.

"Dad," my daughter Amy whispered, "why are you crying? I've never seen you cry."

"I don't know."

But I did know. I was seeing my yesterdays. My grown children as wide-eyed little kids, asking me where I was going. And me telling them, "Straight up." The Jazz Giants rehearsing at Bill's Castle. A boy sitting on a bus on a cold winter night, clutching his first saxophone wrapped in a pillow case. All the jazz concerts the band had played. Katherine Hepburn scolding me. Benny Goodman captivating me. Paul Whiteman berating me. Woody Herman and Duke Ellington making me feel humble. Las Vegas dazzling and disappointing me. The years with Damone. Elvis greeting me with such honesty. The miles of piled-up travel. And saying good-bye to a teary young family on the front porch, as I'd leave to seek fame and fortune on yet another road trip. . . .

I tried to tell my family that this CD was more than just a recording, that their lives were in it as much as mine. It didn't matter that I couldn't find the words. They knew.

We listened to the CD together. The sound of the band-its energy and musicality-far exceeded the memories I had parked away. Now suddenly the sounds were alive and bright again, clearer than ever.

The look on their faces was worth the struggling years. The kids understood at last why the Jazz Giants had been one of the most important musical accomplishments of my life, and appreciated what it took to create it.""

So, if that doesn't grab you, you're either dead or nothing will. I highly recommend this delightful, entertaining memoir and hope with its next edition we find a CD included so that we too can enjoy the sound of the Jazz Giants.

Time of My Life - Patrick Swayze

"Time Of My Life" is the title of a hit of a favorite movie of the 1980's-Dirty Dancing. It 's also a way of editing the autobiography of the actor Patrick Swayze.

Swayze was born into a family of dancers. Trained as a dancer was dancing in many roles before his first professional role in a Disney production. He was famous dance schools before accepting an injury dreams shattered. Chosen to represent Danny Zuko in a stage adaptation of Grease, beforehis first film role in U.S. Skatetown Swayze went to one of the ten best actor in some memorable films made. His greatest triumphs are professional, well-Dirty Dancing and Ghost.

Swayze has also for his long marriage to wife Lisa Niemi, a male dancer made famous actor. His battle with pancreatic cancer has been documented by the press, and finally his life in September 2009.

The autobiography is written with Niemi, details of their life together, alongwith professional success (and failures). This is an insight into a lasting romance in Hollywood.

For me the book was devoid of depth. I felt very glossed over as he would suffer from cancer and thought, "Oh, I die, I write an essay." (Of course, Some would probably use colorful language ...) If there is some good information about your favorite movies ("Dirty Dancing") filed, it was nothing more that could be found during a Google. Search Swayze Still Life was certainly interesting, and he will be missed.

Dough bakes a surprise from a story by Mort Zachte

For all of us love to keep family histories of our ancestors who made their way to America, where the "streets" paved with gold, readers know the value and charm of this memoir by Mort Zachte relatable. Death of grandparents were Jewish immigrants, Max and Lena Wolk, and opened a bakery in the Lower East Side of New York in 1926. The children of Harry and bachelor Joe came to work the oven before their parents died, and was throughout his life. His daughter, Helen Mort'sMother also worked there and that's where Mort grew up. It 'was to escape at that time for a family common in America and then work hard to eek a living lean while supporting each other.

"The Shop", as the family called each time the business was not really a bakery, but rather a place of day-old bread and bakery products sold. Cynthia Lennon starts her autobiographical tale reflecting on the death of his famous ex-husband, John Lennon and within the first chapter of John's personality shows two insights that have not really been discussed in books about the Beatles. It is a catchy beginning, a warm heart, tender and tragic history.

When the book begins, Cynthia is a teenager's top art school. Shortly after, he met John Lennon. The two make an unlikely pair. He grew up in a beautifulDistrict to a "good" girls and John Lennon is a teenager with a single cause of the rebels - Rock and Roll.

Cynthia points out a few things they had in common short-sighted in the book - and were both stuck on the loss of their parents when they were seventeen. (Cynthia lost her father when she was seventeen, and John lost his mother.) Quick, Cynthia and John start a relationship. Their love is what John needs. And 'being a constant in his life that is full ofUncertainty.

Cynthia is there before John and the Beatles make famous. She speaks from his humble origins, and the family of John. We arrive at John Aunt Mimi, the woman who raised him, is a very totalitarian matriarch, who was very rare John Small, simple acts of love. John also has two younger sisters, who worship him, Jacqui and Julia. There are many pages, John. He is in love, but has a wild side to him jealous. SWEET MANDARIN begins with the story of Elena's grandmother Lily Kwok, Tai Po Leung was born in 1918 and Guangzhou.
