For all of us love to keep family histories of our ancestors who made their way to America, where the "streets" paved with gold, readers know the value and charm of this memoir by Mort Zachte relatable. Death of grandparents were Jewish immigrants, Max and Lena Wolk, and opened a bakery in the Lower East Side of New York in 1926. The children of Harry and bachelor Joe came to work the oven before their parents died, and was throughout his life. His daughter, Helen Mort'sMother also worked there and that's where Mort grew up. It 'was to escape at that time for a family common in America and then work hard to eek a living lean while supporting each other.
"The Shop", as the family called each time the business was not really a bakery, but rather a place of day-old bread and bakery products sold. Mort childhood centered on the small shop in Manhattan, with its smells, sounds, costumes and customers. All these things were made, whatthe fabric of their lives. Mort family lived in an apartment in Brooklyn and was a hard life, but life he knew.
